Things I love about working from home (collab post)

Hi everyone, I’m Shelly from GrowingWithSpawn and I’m excited to be taking over Niraj’s blog today. As we finally settle into 2021, I can’t help but wonder if things are about to change again. You see, 2020 was a pretty decent year for us introverts. There were no socials and we could blame the law for not leaving our homes. We even got to work from home! When I look back on the year that was, there are some things that I would definitely like to keep going forward. One of these is working from home, and I’ll tell you why.

Working from home means you can wake up later

If there are any sleep-deprived humans reading this, I’m sure you can all agree that it would be nice to spend an extra few hours in bed each morning. Well, when you work from home, that is a luxury that you are blessed with every single day! With the busy lives we generally lead, most adults don’t get nearly enough sleep. And that is evident in our moods, our health and even our appearance! It is very true that we need to get out and about so as not to become slugs. But on the flip side, with all the bustling about, we always forget to rest.

Midday workouts can be a thing

When I used to work in the office – and yes, I am manifesting that this stay-at-home thing will become permanent – I exercised at 5am each morning. Yes, 5 am. And I wasn’t exercising in my living room or garage. By 4:35am sharp each morning, I made the huge sacrifice of pulling myself out of bed, hopping in the car and driving to my CrossFit gym. This was something I did for some ‘me time’ so it didn’t really matter what time I slept the night before. Imagine waking up at 4:35am when you’ve had evening socials with your colleagues!

Now that I am working from home indefinitely, I try to fit in a midday workout. This way, I can catch up on my sleep in the mornings and spend some time blogging in the evening. If you have had the pleasure of working from home, I’m sure you can agree that you will not spend a full 9 hours actually working. Why not use the time for something positive for your wellbeing?

Eating healthy isn’t that hard

When the lockdown first started, I found myself struggling to stay out of the fridge. And when the junk food in the fridge was finished, I would turn to to the pantry for snacks. 5kg later, I definitely have some bad habits that I’m struggling to kick. The good thing, though, is that there’s a way around this. It took me long to figure this out, but if you don’t actually stock any junk, you’re forced to eat healthy!

Working from the office usually means that you will either buy takeout each day or meal prep. Now if you are anything like me, meal prep is not exactly top of your priority list when it comes to chores. Being at home gives you the luxury of cooking healthy food in between breaks. And you can actually eat hot meals too!

Family time is all the time!

As human beings, it’s in our nature to need to feel like we belong. The funny thing is that we already do belong to a small circle even though it doesn’t always feel like it. Well, when you work from home, you get the chance to spend more quality time with your family. As a mom and wife, being home gave me the chance to really bond with my people. Chasing a busy toddler did get overwhelming at times, but it was a gift I would never have gotten otherwise. Thank you 2020!

You don’t need to buy new clothes

Take this with a pinch of salt, because working from home after spending years in the office can actually break bank. I didn’t have many “chill” clothes before 2020 because my life was work. Thankfully, I did have lots of gym clothes that have carried me through this season of life.

But for any normal person, you would be spending less money on buying nice pieces of clothing and just stick to the typical sweats and tee. If you don’t agree with me, I would like to see picture evidence proving otherwise!

You get to work on other projects

Before 2020, I hadn’t ever completed any DIY projects. It’s not to say that I didn’t want to. Life was just too busy to get anything done. Once the pandemic hit, DIY projects were all I could really do since non-essential companies were forced to close. And with nowhere to go, I even started my blog!

When you work from home, you are gifted the luxury of doing other things you’ve put on hold. New hobbies, missed movies, reading… you name it. This is different from being in the office where you are expected to look busy even when you aren’t. Or to sit in long meetings that don’t even require your input. With only twenty-four hours in the day, why can’t we do both?

Conclusion

Although working from home can be tough on productivity, finding ways to make it work can be rewarding in the long run. Of Course, not everyone can survive the isolation and limited space, I get that. But with a few tweaks to your home setting, working from home can actually be really productive. Niraj and I actually had a mini debate on this topic and he gave some interesting points in favour of working from the office. Want to see what his thoughts are? Well, head on over to my blog and read his post!

Thanks Niraj for having me here.

  1. While I did enjoy mid-day workouts, spending more time planning my meals, spending more time with family when I worked from home in 2020 but I got really bummed out after 4-5 months. Not being able to interact with my colleagues and have in person meetings/discussions seemed to just increase the work. And the lines between work and off time just started to get blurred after one point. I also felt like not being able to leave the house just added to my anxiety. I definitely prefer working from office.

  2. Working from home and has been such a blessing and a curse at the same time. Not having to pack your lunch the night before, not having to spend so much money each month on a train pass. Being able to sit in the comfort of my own home. Its been lovely. But on the flip side, I miss seeing my work friends and talking to theme everyday. Going out for lunch, the commute. Its a love hate relationship and really depends on the day!

    1. I think a lot of people feel like that and thats why many people would prefer a mix between working from home and working in the office. Something like 2/3 days in the office and the rest from home in a given week! Thanks for commenting 🙂

  3. Great post Shelley.
Wow that was dedication to get up early and hope in a car to do crossfire. And working from home ur saving money. Do you get a allowance as you’re consuming more household energy working at home?

  5. I agree to everything, although I still prefer to wake up early having the option to sleep innis great. I loving getting in a full yoga session and spending time with my family and working on my own projects.

  6. I am not sure,, I personally eat more at home than I ever did in the office and that’s because in the office I only ate what I took with me and at home it’s all here all the time. I don’t have a home family so it can get pretty boring and as I am a people person I really miss interaction with others at the moment, in work and outside of it.

I do agree with workouts though, lunchtime workouts are now a thing, when I say that I mean running as again in my work we have a gym and football which I used to do during lunch.

My biggest benefit is getting things done at home and not needing as much washing to do. On the other side to that is using more electric and gas to stay warm and having to get my own coffee.
